Meg's Inspiration
People write for lots of different reasons. Some write to release demons, others to build themselves a home, still others to release their souls from pain. I write because it brings me freedom.
It wasn't always this way. In fact, many years ago I couldn't write at all.
It's been over 20 years ago. My father, my son, and my husband all died within the space of three years. I didn't know how to cope. My life consisted of going to work, coming home, going to bed, getting up, and doing it all over again. I had a family, but I don't remember doing much for my other children. All I could do was put one foot in front of another. I was depressed to the point of being suicidal.
I knew I needed help, so I went to a friend for counseling. She tried various things to lift me out of my depression. One weekend, we went together to San Diego. On the way back, she introduced me to "The Akathist of Thanksgiving" by John Taverner. It was a beautiful composition set to the poetry of a Russian prisoner. As I listened, I thought about this man, writing of the beauty of nature while he himself was never to walk in the beauty of God's world again. I thought that if this man could write about things that he hadn't seen in years, then I should be able to write about what I can see every day. Not being a big fan of nature, I decided to write about God. That was the start.
Since that day so long ago, I have written poetry, short stories, sermons, and many other things. My book Biblical Portraits has just been published! It is a series of character studies on people who impacted the life of Jesus', as well as the lives of those impacted by Jesus.
